Getting Started With Content

Where to start with creating content?

The heart of a successful website is the original, relevant content that it contains. No matter what topic you choose, you must be able to create interesting content that will keep people coming back to your site for the long term.

With all the ideas in your head, where do you start creating your site’s content?

First, you must capture all your ideas in a single place. Eventually you will probably want to store and update your ideas electronically, but the tool you use doesn’t matter right now. Use a notebook, a word processor, a spreadsheet, a mind map, or whatever works for you. Just write it all down in one place.

Take all the ideas you gathered and start organizing them by topics or content categories. Once you’ve taken an initial stab at it, you might get some inspiration for additional categories by browsing through books, magazines, blogs, forums, membership sites, videos, etc. that relate to your topic. Remember that you won’t be stuck with these categories forever - this is just a starting point. You will add to the list and refine it over time.

Look at your list of content categories. Start drafting ideas for articles, interviews, etc. within each category.  Keeping detailed notes of your ideas will give you a jump-start when you need to work on the next content piece.

Once you have emptied your mind of all the different ideas for categories and content, pick the most appealing topic. Even if you don’t have a lot of time right now, start writing. Get a few paragraphs written and saved. Come back to it in a few hours and finish it up. Put it through a spell-checker and maybe have one other person take a quick look at it. Don’t worry whether it is perfect. Once you are finished, just put it up on your site. Getting started is the hardest part, so you need to achieve that milestone and move past it.

Have an action-packed day!
